Astrocytes populate every region of the central nervous system, but their density, morphology, and functional properties vary by region — a mapping neuroscience is still refining.

Cortex and hippocampus

Gray-matter regions are populated by protoplasmic astrocytes occupying non-overlapping anatomical domains.198


§ 2

White matter

Fibrous astrocytes predominate in white matter tracts, where they interact closely with myelinated axons.


§ 3

Specialized regions

Bergmann glia in the cerebellum, Müller cells in the retina, and tanycytes near the third ventricle are examples of specialized astrocyte-like cells.180,182
