The Different Types of Astrocytes
A cell family, not a single cell.
Astrocytes are not a monolithic population. They vary in morphology, molecular identity, and function across brain regions — and this heterogeneity is a major current area of research.

Classical morphological categories
Protoplasmic astrocytes populate gray matter with bushy, densely branched processes; fibrous astrocytes populate white matter with longer, more linear processes.198

Molecular and regional diversity
Single-cell transcriptomics has revealed multiple molecular subtypes within regions, with distinct gene-expression profiles.180

Why heterogeneity matters
Different astrocyte types likely serve different functions — and respond differently to disease. Understanding the map is a prerequisite for astrocyte-targeted therapies.
