Epilepsy is a disorder of network hyperexcitability. Astrocyte dysfunction — particularly of potassium buffering and glutamate uptake — has been implicated in its pathogenesis.

Astrocyte contribution

Impaired astrocyte potassium buffering and glutamate uptake can produce circuit hyperexcitability and contribute to seizure generation.206,182
