Astrocytes and Memory Formation
From encoding to consolidation — an emerging astrocytic role.
Memory formation involves the strengthening of specific synaptic circuits over time. Astrocytes influence this process through modulation of NMDA-dependent plasticity, metabolic support, and possibly by contributing to memory-related network states.
§ 1
Experimental evidence
Activation of hippocampal astrocytes has been shown to enhance memory recall in mice, suggesting a functional role beyond mere support.195
§ 2
Human relevance
Whether the same mechanisms extend to human declarative memory in a comparable fashion is not yet established, but the biological plausibility is strong.
