Learning has classically been attributed to changes in neuronal synapses. Contemporary work suggests astrocytes contribute to the biological conditions under which those changes occur.

Astrocyte activity and behavior

Chemogenetic and optogenetic manipulation of astrocyte activity can alter learning-related neural potentiation and behavioral performance in animal models.195,196

A cautious framing

Direct translation to human learning is not yet established. What is established is that astrocytes are involved in the biology that supports learning.
