GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mature central nervous system. Astrocytes contribute to its uptake, metabolism, and — in specific contexts — release.

Astrocytes in the GABA cycle

Astrocytes participate in GABA uptake and metabolism through GAT-3 transporters and glutamine synthesis.182

Astrocytic GABA release

Under certain conditions, astrocytes can release GABA and thereby influence local inhibitory tone.185
