Neuroception: How the Body Reads Safety
Below-conscious detection of safety and threat.
Neuroception is the term Stephen Porges introduced for the nervous system’s below-conscious detection of safety and threat. The underlying claim — that the body continuously evaluates the environment, other people, and internal state for signals of ease or danger — is broadly supported by current autonomic neuroscience, even where specific Polyvagal claims are being scientifically revised.
