The Language of Safety Cues

The vocabulary the body reads before words arrive.

The nervous system reads safety through a specific vocabulary of cues that operate below conscious awareness. Learning to notice and generate these cues is one of the most reliable clinical skills available.

§ 1

The core vocabulary

Prosody — warm, melodic vocal tone, rising and falling; the register a caregiver uses spontaneously with an infant. Facial expression — soft eyes, gentle mouth, symmetrical warmth. Gaze — steady but non-intrusive. Breath — slow and even in the other person, which cues our own respiration to follow. Predictability — environments and rituals that behave the way we expect. Touch — consented, weight-bearing, warm contact.

Each of these cues is supported by independent literatures on facial and vocal signalling, physiological synchrony, and attachment neuroscience.26,158,101,100


§ 3

The glimmer register

Deb Dana’s clinical writing gave the field the language of glimmers — brief detected cues of safety that accumulate into a settled state. The clinical utility of the term is now widespread.148,149


§ 4

Cues can be offered

These are not personality traits. They are trainable outputs. A person who deliberately offers safety cues to themselves and others changes the field around them at the level of physiology.
