The Neuroscience of Prediction

Predictive processing, priors, and why the brain sees what it expects.

The dominant contemporary framework for how the brain processes information is predictive processing. The brain does not passively receive the world; it actively generates the world it expects, then adjusts at the margins. Understanding this reframes almost every question about human experience.

The core claim

At every level — sensory, emotional, autonomic — the brain generates best-guess predictions about incoming input and updates them only when mismatch is large enough to warrant the metabolic cost.1,2,4,8

Perception as controlled hallucination

What we experience as raw perception is closer to the brain’s best model of the world, corrected by the smallest necessary revisions from incoming data. This is not a defect. It is what makes cognition metabolically possible.5,6

Constructed emotion

The same logic extends to feeling states. Lisa Feldman Barrett’s theory of constructed emotion argues that the brain uses prior experience to categorise incoming interoceptive input, generating what we experience as anger, sadness, or ease.3,51,52

What this means for patterns

A pattern, in this framing, is a high-precision prior. Patterns feel obvious not because reality confirms them but because the brain preferentially runs the interpretation it has repeatedly received.7
