Naming emotional contagion as a legitimate perceptual channel legitimises what social convention often dismisses as "being paranoid."

The Science

Hatfield, Cacioppo, and Rapson (1993), in Current Directions in Psychological Science, formalised the theory of primitive emotional contagion: humans automatically and unconsciously mimic the facial, vocal, and postural expressions of those around them, and this mimicry produces a corresponding shift in the mimicker’s own affective state. Rizzolatti and Craighero (2004), in the Annual Review of Neuroscience, reviewed the mirror-neuron system, providing a neural substrate for how observed actions and, by extension, observed affective displays produce internal simulations that inform social understanding.
