You leave a dinner and feel as though you have run a race. Nothing bad happened. And yet the fatigue is unmistakable. It has an explanation.

The Science

Porges (2007), in Biological Psychology, formalised polyvagal theory, arguing that the ventral vagal complex governs a social-engagement system that supports safe connection with low autonomic effort — and that its efficacy depends on both parties’ signals of safety (voice prosody, facial expression, gaze). Kok and Fredrickson (2010), in Biological Psychology, showed prospectively that higher cardiac vagal tone predicts greater growth in positive emotions and social connectedness over time — and vice versa — documenting an upward spiral between physiology and relationships.

Current Research

Contemporary work is quantifying the physiological cost of dysregulating relationships (elevated cortisol, reduced heart-rate variability, lower vagal tone) and testing coregulation-based interventions.
