MacLeod and Mathews (1988), in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, demonstrated attentional bias to threat in anxious individuals: participants high in trait anxiety systematically directed attention toward threat-related stimuli even when task-irrelevant, and this bias was measurable in milliseconds. Mathews and MacLeod (2005), in the Annual Review of Clinical Psychology, extended the model to a broader cognitive-vulnerability framework: automatic attentional and interpretive biases toward threat maintain anxious mood across time, and — crucially — they are modifiable through targeted training.
