The Science

Diener, Lucas, and Scollon (2006), in American Psychologist, revised classical hedonic adaptation theory: while positive events’ emotional effects do fade partially over time, adaptation is neither complete nor uniform — individual differences and life circumstances matter substantially, and durable well-being gains are possible. Brickman, Coates, and Janoff-Bulman (1978), in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, provided the foundational study: lottery winners were not much happier and paralysed accident victims not much less happy than controls, illustrating how baseline expectations regress powerfully — which the mind then mistakes for a metaphysical truth about happiness itself.

Contemporary work is refining hedonic adaptation as partial, moderated by variety, meaning, and social embedding — with implications for durable well-being interventions.

Practical Implications

For anyone: the sense that "good will not last" is partly a real adaptation effect and partly a prediction bias. Neither is the whole story. Savouring and variety extend the good; awareness of the bias corrects the forecast.
