Does This Mean Reality Is Not Real?

Have you ever left a predictive-processing article vaguely uneasy, wondering whether the writer was implying that nothing you experience is actually real? You may recognise that uneasiness. This piece is an attempt to close the gap between what the research actually says and what its more enthusiastic popularisations sometimes seem to say.
The short answer: reality is real. Perception is constructed. Both are true simultaneously, and getting the distinction right protects both scientific honesty and everyday sanity.
What the research supports [Observation] is that conscious perception is not a direct readout of sensory data. It is a construction the nervous system produces by combining prediction with sensory correction. This is well-established. The frame is careful and consequential and does not commit anyone to any strong metaphysical claim.
What the research does not support is the leap that sometimes appears in popular writing: that because perception is constructed, reality itself is somehow not there or is merely subjective or is a hallucination. That leap is a category error. Perception is a process a nervous system runs. Reality is what the process is running about. The two are not the same, and the fact that the process is constructive does not tell us anything one way or the other about the reality it is trying to model.
A useful analogy is a weather report. A weather report is constructed. Meteorologists gather data, run models, generate predictions, and produce something that appears on your phone. That construction does not mean the weather does not exist. It means the weather exists, and the report is a model of it that is more or less accurate. Perception works roughly the same way. The world exists. Your nervous system generates a construction of it that is usually accurate enough to be useful.
This matters for a few practical reasons.
First, it protects you from a certain kind of relativism that sneaks in through the back door. If someone tells you that because perception is constructed, all perceptions are equally valid, they are making a philosophical claim that the research does not support. Some perceptions correspond better to what is actually there than others. The construction is real, and so is the world it is constructing.
Second, it protects you from a certain kind of self-doubt. If your nervous system produced a vivid experience of something — a sound, a sensation, a felt sense of what a moment meant — that experience is real as experience. It may or may not correspond exactly to what happened. Both facts can be true. Your experience is not fake because it was constructed.
Third, it clarifies what interventions like therapy, meditation, and cognitive work are actually doing. They are not helping you access some deeper reality behind the construction. They are helping you notice the construction happening, hold it more lightly, and update it when the sensory data disagrees. That is a smaller and more useful goal than escaping to a raw reality that no one has direct access to anyway.
Hold the distinction: the world is real, and your experience of it is one nervous system's careful, ongoing model of it. Both matter.
