Why Two People Read the Same Room Differently

Have you ever walked out of a meeting with a colleague and realised the two of you seemed to have attended different meetings? Not disagreed on interpretation — actually recalled different tones, different emphases, different implications from the same words. The predictive processing frame offers one of the more honest explanations of why.

What perception delivers to consciousness is not raw sensory data. It is the nervous system's best current prediction, updated wherever the data forces an update. The prediction is built from priors — the accumulated expectations that person's nervous system carries from every prior meeting, every prior conversation with that particular colleague, every prior meeting on a topic that felt similar. Two people bringing different priors into the same room are, in a real sense, perceiving different rooms (Feldman Barrett, 2017) [Supported Finding].

This is not a claim that reality is subjective. Reality is real. The room genuinely contains a specific set of people saying specific words. What is subjective is the perception — the felt experience of what those words meant, what tone accompanied them, what was left unsaid. Two nervous systems can perceive the same objective event accurately, given their priors, and end up with meaningfully different conscious experiences of it.

A concrete example helps. Someone raises their voice slightly in a meeting to make a point. A person whose nervous system carries a strong prior for raised voices as threat will experience a small stress response, register the moment as tense, and remember the meeting as difficult. A person whose nervous system carries a prior for raised voices as passion will experience a small alerting response, register the moment as engaged, and remember the meeting as productive. Neither is misreading. Both are perceiving accurately given the models they arrived with.

What this frame offers, practically, is a way to hold interpersonal disagreement without dismissing anyone's experience. When two people leave a conversation with different accounts, the question is rarely who is right about what happened. The more useful question is what priors each nervous system was carrying, and how those priors are shaping the felt experience each one walked out with.

It also suggests a specific kind of humility. If your own perception of a moment is a controlled hallucination stabilised by your priors, then the intensity of your certainty about what someone else meant is not a good indicator of the accuracy of that perception. The most confident readings often carry the strongest prior — which is not the same as the most accurate reading.

One useful practice is to ask, when a moment lands hard, what a nervous system carrying different priors might have perceived in the same event. The point is not to override your own experience. It is to hold your own experience as one accurate perception among possibly several, rather than as the definitive account.
