Definition

The microbiome is the community of bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses that inhabits the gut and other body sites. It participates in digestion, immunity, mood, and metabolism.

Why it matters

The microbiome is real and important. It is also one of the most oversold subjects in wellness marketing. Precision protects patients on both sides of that gap.

The Science

The gut microbiome influences immune development, produces neuroactive metabolites, and shapes vagal signaling. Composition differs across individuals, cultures, and diets. Causal links to specific mental-health outcomes remain an active research field, with many findings still preliminary in humans.

The NSI Perspective

NSI treats the microbiome as one system in a network, not as a master lever. Diet, sleep, movement, stress, and medications all shape it.

Clinical Implications

Microbiome-informed care is legitimate. Microbiome-only care is usually not. Interpretation of consumer microbiome tests requires caution.

Practical Application

Feeding a diverse microbiome with a broadly varied diet is well supported. Chasing a specific “optimal” microbiome is not.
