Definition

Digestion is exquisitely sensitive to autonomic state. Sympathetic activation slows gastric emptying, alters motility, changes secretions, and shifts blood flow away from digestive organs.

Why it matters

Understanding why the stomach churns, closes, or cramps under stress removes the shame from these experiences and clarifies what changes are possible.

The Science

The vagus nerve and sympathetic system directly control digestive motility and secretion. Under threat, digestion is throttled; under safety, it resumes. Chronic stress produces sustained dysregulation and altered motility patterns.
