Definition

Procedural memory is memory for how to do things — walking, riding a bike, playing an instrument, driving a familiar route. It is largely unconscious once established.

Why it matters

Procedural memory extends beyond motor skills. Emotional habits and relational reflexes are stored procedurally too, which is why they run automatically.

The Science

Procedural memory depends on basal ganglia and cerebellar circuits and is remarkably durable, often persisting when other memory systems fail.

The NSI Perspective

NSI recognizes that some of the most important things we do are procedural. Changing them requires practice, not insight.

Clinical Implications

Skills-based interventions leverage procedural learning. Insight alone rarely changes procedure.

Practical Application

If a pattern runs automatically, expect that changing it will require repetition, not just understanding.
