Definition
Culture shapes which emotions are expressed, how, when, and to whom. There are cross-cultural regularities and substantial cultural specificity in emotional life.
Why it matters
Assuming any one culture’s emotional norms are universal produces misunderstanding and clinical harm.
The Science
Cross-cultural research (Ekman, Elfenbein, Mesquita, Barrett) documents both shared features (facial expression basics, physiological arousal) and cultural variation (display rules, emotion vocabularies, appraisal patterns).
The NSI Perspective
NSI treats emotion as biologically anchored and culturally shaped — both, at once.
Clinical Implications
Culturally informed emotional literacy outperforms mono-cultural assumptions.
Practical Application
How you show what you feel is partly biology, partly the culture that raised you.
