Sleep serves multiple functions. Astrocyte-dependent processes — particularly glymphatic clearance — are among the most striking findings of the last decade.

The glymphatic system, dependent on astrocyte AQP4 water channels, appears to clear brain metabolites during sleep.193,192,194

Astrocytes also contribute to sleep homeostasis and to the cognitive consequences of sleep loss.210
