It is easy to speak of relationships as emotional. It is harder to admit how physiological they are. The people you sit beside, live with, work near — they are not just influencing your mood. They are shaping the tone of your nervous system in real time. Heart rates align. Breathing patterns match. Stress hormones rise in one person and can be detected in the person sitting across from them. You do not need to be told a room is anxious. Your body knows before you do.

We have been taught to think of ourselves as bounded creatures. Skin as border. Skull as fortress. The self-contained individual who regulates from within, who manages stress through willpower or technique, who succeeds or fails on the strength of interior resources alone. It is a compelling story. It is also physiologically incomplete.

The truth is messier and more interesting. Your nervous system does not operate in isolation. It never has. From the moment you were born, your physiology has been in conversation with the physiology of others. A newborn's heart rate steadies in the arms of a calm parent. A toddler's cortisol drops when a caregiver speaks in low tones. These are not metaphors. They are measurements.

And they do not stop at childhood. Adults, too, are constantly borrowing from the nervous systems around them. A calm nervous system is contagious. So is a chronically braced one.

The old idea, made new

Researchers used to call it emotional contagion, and it sounded almost quaint — the idea that moods could spread like colds, that one person's anxiety might ripple outward into a group. The language has evolved. Now we speak of mirror systems, physiological synchrony, social baseline theory. The terminology has sharpened, but the core observation remains the same: humans do not regulate themselves in isolation. We regulate in relationship.

In the 1990s, neuroscientists discovered mirror neurons in macaque monkeys — cells that fired not only when the monkey performed an action, but also when it watched another monkey perform the same action. The brain, it seemed, was not simply observing. It was simulating. Later research suggested that humans possess similar systems, networks that allow us to map the experiences of others onto our own neural architecture.

This is not empathy in the soft sense. It is empathy as a biological process. When you watch someone wince, your own pain circuits flicker. When you sit across from someone whose breath is shallow and fast, your own breathing begins to shift. The boundaries we imagine between self and other are more porous than we like to believe.

Studies of couples show that their heart rates synchronize during conversation. Therapy dyads demonstrate matching skin conductance patterns. Even strangers in a waiting room begin to mirror each other's postural sway. The nervous system is always listening, always adjusting, always tuning itself to the people nearby.

The boundaries we imagine between self and other are more porous than we like to believe.

What social baseline theory suggests

One of the more elegant ideas in the field is called social baseline theory. It was developed by psychologist James Coan and his colleagues, and it proposes something quietly radical: that the human brain, over evolutionary time, has come to assume the presence of others as the baseline condition. Meaning: solitude is metabolically expensive. Connection is what the nervous system was designed for.

In one of Coan's experiments, participants lay in an fMRI scanner while being told they might receive a mild electric shock. When they held the hand of a trusted partner, the threat-related activity in their brains decreased. The presence of another person literally changed the brain's assessment of danger. The shock was the same. The physiology was not.

In another study, participants were asked to estimate the steepness of a hill. When standing next to a friend, they judged the hill as less steep than when standing alone. The closer the friendship, the gentler the slope appeared. That is not sentiment. That is measurement. The brain offloads effort onto trusted others. It conserves resources by assuming it will not have to face the world alone.

This has profound implications. It means that isolation is not simply an emotional hardship. It is a metabolic one. The brain in solitude must work harder to predict, to plan, to assess threat. It cannot distribute the load. It cannot borrow. The cost shows up in cortisol levels, in sleep architecture, in immune function. Loneliness is not a feeling. It is a physiological state.

Which is why the room matters

If your nervous system is constantly borrowing from the systems around it, then who you spend time with is not a lifestyle preference. It is a physiological input. Some people leave you steadier than they found you. Others leave you subtly wired, without you being able to name why.

This is not about whether someone is kind or unkind, interesting or dull. It is about the quality of their regulation. A person can be warm and still leave you depleted if their own nervous system is chronically braced. You feel it in the way they hold their shoulders, the speed of their speech, the quality of their attention. Your body responds before your mind catches up.

Conversely, there are people in whose presence you notice your breath deepening. Your jaw softens. Time seems to slow slightly. These are not accidents of personality. They are the signatures of a nervous system that has learned to settle, and in settling, offers yours permission to do the same.

The writer and somatic therapist Resmaa Menakem speaks of settled versus unsettled bodies, and the way trauma can live not just in individuals but in families, communities, lineages. When you enter a room, you are not just meeting a person. You are meeting their history, their inherited patterns of bracing and release. And they are meeting yours.

The cost of chronic mismatch

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from spending too much time in nervous systems that do not match your own. It is not the fatigue of hard work or late nights. It is the fatigue of constant recalibration. Your body keeps trying to sync, and the signal keeps shifting.

You see this in workplaces where the ambient anxiety is high. Even if your own tasks are manageable, you absorb the tension in the room. Your shoulders tighten. Your digestion slows. You go home and feel inexplicably depleted, as though you have been running even while sitting still.

You see it in relationships where one person is chronically dysregulated and the other becomes the stabilizer. The stabilizer's nervous system is always working, always compensating, always trying to create enough calm for two. It is invisible labor, and it has a cost.

Lisa Feldman Barrett, in her book How Emotions Are Made, describes the brain as constantly running a metabolic budget — predicting what the body will need, allocating resources, trying to keep the system in balance. When you are in chronic mismatch with the people around you, that budget is perpetually strained. You are spending more than you are taking in.

What the body already knows

Your nervous system is not confused about who it borrows from. It knows which rooms cost more than they give. It knows which voices make your chest tighten and which ones let you breathe. The confusion is in the mind, which has been trained to override the body's signals in the name of politeness, obligation, loyalty, or love.

We are taught to distrust our physiological responses. To call them overreactions. To pathologize our own sensitivity. But sensitivity is not weakness. It is information. The body is always gathering data about safety, about threat, about whether the people nearby are helping or hindering the work of staying alive.

Sometimes the body's verdict is inconvenient. It tells you that someone you are supposed to love leaves you feeling hollow. It tells you that a job you worked hard to get is slowly eroding your capacity to rest. It tells you that the life you have built is not the life your nervous system can sustain.

Listening to that verdict does not mean acting on it immediately. Life is complicated. People are complicated. But it does mean taking the information seriously. It means acknowledging that your body's responses are not irrational. They are adaptive. They are trying to keep you whole.

The people who leave you softer

There is another side to this. If nervous systems borrow from each other, then the people who leave you steadier are not luxuries. They are, in the most literal sense, part of your physiology.

These are the people in whose presence you notice your thoughts slowing. Your breath dropping into your belly. Your face relaxing in ways you did not realize it was held. You do not have to perform competence or composure. You do not have to manage their emotions or anticipate their needs. You can simply be, and that is enough.

This is not about finding people who never challenge you or who agree with everything you say. It is about finding people whose regulation is steady enough to hold space for difficulty without collapsing into it. People who can be with you in distress without needing to fix it or flee from it. People whose nervous systems say, quietly and consistently, you are safe here.

The psychologist and researcher Stephen Porges, who developed polyvagal theory, speaks of co-regulation as a biological imperative. We are wired to soothe each other, to signal safety through tone of voice, facial expression, the rhythm of our movements. When that signaling works, both nervous systems benefit. When it fails, both suffer.

What to do with this

This is not permission to abandon everyone who ever unsettled you. Life is not that clean. We all have relationships that are complicated, that carry history, that matter even when they are difficult. And we all have moments when our own nervous system is the one doing the unsettling.

But it is permission to take seriously what your body already knows — that regulation is a shared achievement, not a solo project, and that some rooms cost more than they give. It is permission to notice the difference between temporary discomfort and chronic depletion. Between a relationship that challenges you to grow and one that asks you to shrink.

It is also permission to seek out the people who help you settle. Not because you need them to fix you, but because your nervous system was never meant to do this work alone. Because connection is not a reward for getting yourself together. It is part of how you get yourself together.

And it is permission to become, yourself, the kind of person whose presence steadies others. To do the work of learning how to regulate your own system so that it can offer something useful to the people around you. This is not about perfection. It is about practice. About noticing when you are braced and finding ways to soften. About learning to be with difficulty without transmitting panic.

Connection is not a reward for getting yourself together. It is part of how you get yourself together.

The quiet work of choosing

In the end, this is about choice. Not the dramatic kind — the sudden exit, the severed tie — but the quieter kind. The choice to spend a little more time with the people who leave you softer and a little less with the ones who leave you wired. The choice to notice what your body is telling you and to trust that it is not being dramatic. The choice to build a life in which your nervous system is not constantly working against itself.

It is also about recognizing that you are not a closed system. That the idea of the self-sufficient individual is a myth that serves no one. That needing other people is not a failure of character. It is a feature of your biology.

The people around you are not just shaping your mood. They are shaping your heart rate, your hormone levels, your capacity to rest and repair. They are teaching your nervous system what the world is like — whether it is a place that requires constant vigilance or one that occasionally allows for ease.

The nervous system does not lie about who it borrows from. Listen closely. The people who leave you softer, slower, more like yourself — they are not luxuries. They are, in the most literal sense, part of your physiology. And you are part of theirs.

A final thought

There is something both humbling and liberating in understanding that we are not as separate as we thought. That our nervous systems are in constant dialogue with the world around us, borrowing and lending, shaping and being shaped. It means we are more vulnerable than the myth of the individual suggests. But it also means we are more powerful.

Every interaction is an opportunity. Not to fix or save or rescue, but to offer your own steadiness as a resource. To be the kind of presence that helps another nervous system remember what safety feels like. To create, in your own small corner of the world, a little more room for people to breathe.

This is not sentimental. It is structural. The quality of your presence matters. Not because you are responsible for everyone else's regulation, but because you are part of the environment in which they are trying to regulate. And they are part of yours.

So pay attention. Notice who you borrow from. Notice who borrows from you. Notice the rooms that cost you and the rooms that fill you back up. Your nervous system is always telling you the truth. The only question is whether you are willing to listen.
