António Damásio (b. 1944) is a Portuguese-American behavioral neurologist and neuroscientist whose work — first at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, later at the Brain and Creativity Institute at the University of Southern California — has done more than perhaps any other individual scientist to dismantle the Cartesian separation of thinking and feeling. Trained in medicine at the University of Lisbon (MD 1969), he specialized in behavioral neurology and, arriving at Iowa in 1976, spent nearly three decades studying patients whose focal brain lesions had altered emotion, decision-making, or self-experience in illuminating ways. Working with his wife and long-time collaborator, the neurologist Hanna Damasio, and colleagues including Antoine Bechara and Daniel Tranel, he developed the somatic-marker hypothesis — the claim that bodily signals from prior emotional experiences unconsciously bias reasoning under uncertainty — and, more broadly, a series of overlapping frameworks (in Descartes’ Error, The Feeling of What Happens, Looking for Spinoza, Self Comes to Mind, and The Strange Order of Things) that treat the self as a nested biological process, grounded in homeostasis, elaborated through interoceptive feeling, and completed in reflective self-representation. His clinical work with the famous patient EVR — whose ventromedial-prefrontal-cortex damage left his IQ intact but destroyed his life through catastrophic decision-making — has become one of the field’s most-cited case studies. He is University Professor and David Dornsife Chair in Neuroscience at USC; his lifetime awards include the Prince of Asturias Award, the Grawemeyer Award, and the Signoret Prize. Nirva places him among the foundational scholars because he made feeling philosophically respectable again and — with rigor — showed that the nervous system is not a substrate for the mind so much as the mind itself, seen at the appropriate level.

Where Later Research Meets the Work
The somatic-marker hypothesis and its empirical apparatus (the Iowa Gambling Task, vmPFC lesion studies) have generated a substantial and largely supportive literature in behavioral neurology, neuroeconomics, and decision-science. The distinction between nonconscious emotional responses and the conscious feeling of them has been broadly integrated into affective neuroscience and, importantly, is now shared by scientists as different in orientation as LeDoux and Lisa Feldman Barrett — though they disagree on much else. Contemporary interoception research (Sarah Garfinkel, Hugo Critchley, Karl Friston, Anil Seth) has provided sophisticated empirical grounding for the general claim that feeling is the brain’s representation of the state of the body, and that this representation is central to selfhood and consciousness. Damasio’s emphasis on homeostasis as the biological origin of affect is congruent with contemporary allostatic-load, predictive-processing, and interoceptive-inference frameworks.
Lisa Feldman Barrett’s constructed-emotion theory extends Damasio’s emotion-vs-feeling distinction into a more cognitively-inflected framework. Anil Seth’s "interoceptive inference" account of selfhood is a direct descendant of Damasio-adjacent thinking, married to Bayesian predictive processing. Hugo Critchley’s neuroimaging work on interoception provides much of the empirical basis. Karl Friston’s free-energy principle offers a formal framework compatible with Damasio’s intuitions about homeostasis-and-feeling. Contemporary affective-neuroscience-informed psychotherapies (some formulations of EFT, some trauma approaches) draw on Damasio for their neural rationale. Bud Craig’s work on interoception and the insular cortex provides a specific anatomical substrate for Damasio’s claims.
The Iowa Gambling Task has generated a robust literature but has also been criticized on methodological grounds — some early strong claims about specificity of vmPFC deficit have been refined by subsequent work, and the task’s ability to isolate somatic-marker mechanisms specifically (as opposed to reversal learning or working-memory effects) is debated. Damasio’s theoretical framework is sometimes characterized as "hydraulic" or metaphorical rather than mechanistic in the way Bayesian and predictive-processing accounts now are — his contribution is often ahead of, or complementary to, the formal apparatus later provided by others. Some of the stronger claims about consciousness in Self Comes to Mind remain philosophically and empirically contested; consciousness science has not settled the question of whether feeling is foundational or one of many contributors. His homeostasis framing, taken to a strong reading, risks over-biologizing meaning; NSI holds it with the philosophical humility Damasio himself has generally shown.

Damasio’s Contribution to Nervous System Intelligence — Damasio is in the foundational canon because he restored the body to the theory of the mind — and did so with the rigor of behavioral neurology rather than the enthusiasm of ideology. Nervous System Intelligence is nervous-system-centered precisely because Damasio and the tradition he anchors made it possible to treat "the felt body" as a legitimate scientific object rather than a metaphysical embarrassment. Three of his commitments are load-bearing for NSI. First, feeling is constitutive of reason. Decisions made in the absence of somatic signaling — as vmPFC patients demonstrate — are not calmer or more rational; they are catastrophic. NSI adopts this stance in its clinical, coaching, and coaching-adjacent work: helping a person recover access to their own somatic signal is not the pursuit of "self-care"; it is the restoration of decision-making capacity. Second, the emotion-vs-feeling distinction is one of the most useful clinical tools NSI has inherited from twentieth-century neuroscience. It allows clinicians and writers to speak precisely about mismatches: full autonomic activation without the label of the feeling; the label of a feeling without the underlying activation; the labor of translating one into the other. Third, the three-level self — protoself, core self, autobiographical self — offers a working scaffold for how NSI thinks about selfhood in development, in dissociation, and in contemplative practice. Where NSI updates Damasio, it does so along the lines his own successors already opened: interoception is more richly measurable now (Garfinkel’s heartbeat-detection paradigms, Critchley’s neuroimaging) than it was in the mid-1990s; predictive-processing accounts (Seth, Friston, Barrett) formalize what Damasio articulated in more phenomenological language; and the polyvagal framework (Porges) gives autonomic specificity to the general body-brain integration Damasio insisted on. What NSI does not update is his central move: that feeling is not decoration on top of biology — it is what biology looks like from the inside, at sufficient scale.
