There’s a phrase people use when their own reactions feel like the enemy: My anxiety is ruining my life. My anger is out of control. I shut down and I don't know why.
Underneath all of these is a shared assumption: that the nervous system is malfunctioning. That something inside you is working against you.
What if the opposite is true?
What if every response you experience — even the ones that feel destructive, disproportionate, or inexplicable — is your nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do: protect you?
Not perfectly. Not always proportionately. But always from something. Always in service of something it learned to keep you safe from.
Your Nervous System Is a Protection System
The nervous system is not primarily a thinking system, a feeling system, or a behavioral system. It is, at its most fundamental level, a protection system.

Every response your nervous system produces — every surge of anxiety, every episode of shutdown, every moment of hypervigilance — is an expression of this protective function. The system isn’t working against you. It’s working from you — from everything that shaped it.
The Protective Logic of "Problematic" Responses
Anxiety as Anticipatory Protection
When anxiety rises before a meeting, a conversation, or a social event, the nervous system is not malfunctioning. It is running a prediction: Based on what I’ve learned, situations like this have preceded pain, rejection, or overwhelm. I will prepare you.
Evidence: Externally Validated EvidenceResearch on anticipatory anxiety demonstrates that the nervous system generates threat responses based on learned associations — not necessarily current threat levels. The anxiety is real. The protection is real. The mismatch is between the current environment and the environment the system learned from.
Shutdown as Overwhelm Protection
When the body goes numb, when words disappear, when everything feels distant — this is not a failure to cope. It is a specific protective response.
Evidence: Supported FindingThe defense cascade model (from freeze research, and from Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory — note: Polyvagal Theory remains debated in the scientific community regarding its specific neuroanatomical claims, though its clinical framework is widely used) describes a hierarchy of defensive responses. When the nervous system determines that active defense (fight or flight) is unavailable or insufficient, it shifts toward immobilization — a last-resort protective state that reduces metabolic demand and pain sensitivity.
Shutdown isn’t giving up. It’s the nervous system’s estimation that the safest available option is to reduce exposure.
Hypervigilance as Environmental Scanning
The person who can’t relax, who notices every shift in tone, who reads rooms before entering them — their nervous system learned that environmental monitoring was necessary for safety.

The system learned that missing a cue could mean missing a threat. So it scans. Constantly. Not because it’s broken — because it’s thorough.
Emotional Reactivity as Boundary Signaling
When emotions surge fast and large — anger that erupts, tears that arrive without warning, frustration that feels volcanic — the nervous system is often signaling that a boundary has been crossed, a need has been unmet, or a pattern from the past is being activated in the present.
Evidence: Supported FindingEmotion regulation research suggests that intense emotional responses are more common in individuals whose early environments did not provide consistent co-regulation. The nervous system adapted to signal loudly — because subtle signals were not received.
The Problem Isn't the Response — It's the Context Mismatch
Here is where this reframe becomes practical: your nervous system’s protective strategies were developed in a specific context. They were calibrated to a particular set of conditions — a particular household, relationship, environment, or period of life.
When those strategies persist into contexts where they are no longer proportionate — where the meeting is actually safe, the relationship is actually trustworthy, the environment is actually stable — they feel like overreactions.
But they are not overreactions to what the system learned. They are accurate reactions to an outdated map.
Evidence: Externally Validated EvidenceThis is consistent with predictive processing models of the brain, which propose that the nervous system generates responses based on prior experience and updates those predictions only when new evidence is processed through awareness and attention.
What This Changes
When you stop seeing your responses as the enemy and start seeing them as protection — even misapplied protection — something shifts. You stop fighting yourself. You stop adding a layer of shame on top of every difficult reaction. You stop assuming you are fundamentally broken.
And from that position — from that ground of self-recognition rather than self-judgment — a different kind of change becomes possible. Not change through force. Change through understanding.
