The Story Comes After the Shift

The Nirva Editors 9 min read

Every reaction you have comes with a story. Not just the reaction itself — what you did or said or felt — but a narrative explanation that appears almost simultaneously. The story tells you why. Why you felt that way. Why you responded as you did. Why it makes sense.

The story feels inseparable from the reaction. But here is what the Root of Motion reveals: the story comes after the shift. Not during. Not before. After. The nervous system moves first, and then the mind constructs a narrative that explains the movement. The narrative is real. It is meaningful. But it is not the origin.

How Stories Are Constructed

The human brain is, above all else, a meaning-making organ. It cannot tolerate meaninglessness. When something happens — particularly something that involves strong physiological activation — the brain immediately begins constructing a coherent narrative.

Established scientific consensus — the brain as meaning-making organ.

This construction process is remarkably fast. Within milliseconds of becoming aware of a physiological shift, the brain has already begun assembling a causal story. By the time you can articulate “I feel X because Y,” the construction is complete. It feels like discovery. But it is assembly.

Supported finding — narrative construction operates in milliseconds.

The Shift and the Story: A Dissociation

Research in emotion science has demonstrated that the same physiological shift can produce different stories depending on context. Arousal in the presence of an attractive person becomes “excitement.” The same arousal in the presence of a threatening figure becomes “fear.” The same arousal while exercising is “energy.”

The physiological shift — the Root of Motion — is similar across these scenarios. What changes is the story the brain constructs to explain it. This means the story is not reporting the truth of what happened in the nervous system. It is interpreting the truth. And interpretations are shaped by everything your Nervous System Framework has taught you about what different states mean.

Stories We Live Inside

Over time, the stories we construct about our reactions become fixed narratives. They stop feeling like interpretations and start feeling like facts: “I’m an anxious person.” “I have anger issues.” “I’m too sensitive.”

None of these stories are wrong in a descriptive sense. They capture something real about the patterns. But they are constructed explanations, not primary data. The primary data is the Root of Motion — the nervous system’s movement. The story comes after.

Returning to the Shift

The NIRVA Method® teaches a practice of returning attention to the shift itself — the physiological movement — rather than engaging primarily with the story. It is a practice of noticing the difference between two layers of experience:

  • The shift: What moved in me? What changed in my body? What direction did my nervous system take?
  • The story: What does my mind say about why it moved? What explanation did it construct?

Both layers are real. Both contain information. But they are different kinds of information. The shift is direct. The story is constructed. And when you can distinguish between them — when you can notice the shift without immediately collapsing into the story — you gain a kind of clarity that narrative analysis alone cannot provide.

The Shift Contains What the Story Cannot

There is information in the Root of Motion that no story can capture. The quality of the physiological movement — its speed, its direction, its intensity, its texture — communicates something that words cannot fully express. It communicates the history of your Framework in compressed, embodied form.

When you develop the capacity to attend to the shift directly, you access this information. You do not need the story to understand yourself. The shift tells you what you need to know — not in words, but in direct bodily knowledge. The story will still come. Let it. But know that it arrived after the shift.
