Your Nervous System Was Taking Notes

While you were living your life — growing up, going to school, navigating relationships, surviving whatever your childhood required — your nervous system was quietly building a database. Not a database of facts or narratives, but a database of patterns, predictions, and protocols.

It noted what preceded pain. It noted what preceded safety. It noted which behaviors produced connection and which ones produced withdrawal. It noted the precise conditions under which you needed to be alert, and the rare conditions under which you could rest.

You were not aware this was happening. You did not give consent. Your nervous system took notes anyway.

The Implicit Memory System

What your nervous system records is fundamentally different from what your conscious mind remembers. Daniel Schacter's research on memory systems distinguishes between explicit memory (events you can recall and narrate) and implicit memory (patterns, skills, and associations that influence behavior without conscious recall) (Schacter, 1996).

Your explicit memory says: "When I was eight, my parents argued about money." Your implicit memory says: "Raised voices about resources require hypervigilance and silence." The first is a story. The second is an instruction your body follows automatically.

Implicit memory begins encoding from birth — some researchers argue from the prenatal period. It does not require the hippocampal maturity needed for autobiographical memory. This means your earliest and most formative experiences — the ones that shaped your most fundamental relational and emotional patterns — are stored in a system that does not provide conscious access to the events themselves. You have the instructions without the context.

What Was Being Recorded

Your nervous system was cataloguing specific categories of information:

Safety and threat cues: What predicted danger? What predicted safety? What needed to happen for the environment to stabilize? What were the warning signs that things were about to escalate?

Relational requirements: What did connection cost? What behavior was rewarded with attention? What behavior was punished with withdrawal? What emotional states were acceptable and which ones needed to be hidden?

Physiological associations: What happened in your body during peak stress? What happened during the rare moments of ease? What sensory inputs (sounds, smells, qualities of light) were paired with which emotional states?

Self-related conclusions: Am I too much or not enough? Is my presence wanted? Do my needs matter? Can I trust what I feel?

Allan Schore's research demonstrates that these notes are encoded primarily in the right hemisphere during the first years of life, through the quality of the attachment relationship with primary caregivers (Schore, 2003). The nervous system does not record these as beliefs or stories. It records them as operational settings — baseline configurations that shape perception, behavior, and physiology.

The Notes Become the Operating System

What makes this significant is not just that the notes were taken — it is that they became the operating system you live from. They do not present themselves as memories to be evaluated. They present themselves as reality — as "the way things are," as "who I am," as "what the world is like."

When someone says "I've always been anxious" or "I just don't trust easily" or "I'm not the kind of person who asks for help" — they are often describing their nervous system's notes read back as identity. The notes have become so integrated that they feel like fundamental truth rather than encoded experience.

Bessel van der Kolk's research emphasizes that early implicit encodings shape not just what we do but how we perceive — they filter incoming information through the lens of what has previously been recorded (van der Kolk, 2014). You do not see the world as it is. You see the world through the notes your nervous system took about what the world was.

The Notes Your Nervous System Took About You

Perhaps the most powerful notes are the ones your nervous system took about you. Not about the world or other people — but about your own worth, your own safety, your own right to exist as you are.

These notes were not taken objectively. They were taken by a developing system in conditions it could not control, interpreting the behavior of caregivers and environments as information about itself. If a caregiver was consistently unavailable, the note was not "my caregiver is overwhelmed." The note was "my needs are too much" or "I do not deserve attention."

Louis Cozolino's work on the neuroscience of psychotherapy demonstrates that these self-referential implicit beliefs are among the most resistant to change — because they were encoded before the brain had the developmental capacity to question them (Cozolino, 2010). They were absorbed as fact during a period when the developing brain could not distinguish between "this is happening to me" and "this is because of me."

The Interrupt & Identify Practice

Nervous System Intelligence invites you to begin recognizing where the notes end and where the present begins. When you notice a familiar response — a particular kind of anxiety, a specific pattern of withdrawal, a reflexive interpretation of someone else's behavior — you can ask: "Is this information about right now, or is this a note my nervous system took long ago?"

You may not always be able to answer that question clearly. The notes are implicit precisely because they operate outside conscious access. But the asking itself creates a small opening — a moment where automatic becomes noticed, where operating system becomes visible, where "the way things are" becomes "something I learned."

Updating the Notes

Your nervous system can take new notes. It is taking notes right now — about this moment, about every moment. When you provide it with repeated experiences that contradict the old notes — experiences of safety where it expected danger, of acceptance where it expected rejection, of rest where it expected the need for vigilance — it begins to revise.

Not quickly. Not without resistance. But the same system that recorded the old notes is capable of recording new ones. And over time, the new notes can become as automatic as the old ones once were.
