We have been measuring intelligence for over a century. In that time, we have expanded the definition multiple times — from raw cognitive speed to multiple intelligences to emotional and social capacities. But one system has never been included in any definition of intelligence: the nervous system. The very system that determines what you perceive, how you interpret it, and what you do about it — the system beneath every other form of intelligence — has been invisible in our intelligence frameworks. That is an extraordinary omission. And it has cost us.
The System That Governs Everything Else
It determines what reaches consciousness. Before your cognitive intelligence can process anything, your nervous system has already filtered incoming information through predictions about relevance and threat. It shapes emotional experience. Before EQ can perceive and manage emotions, the nervous system has already constructed those emotions from bodily signals, contextual prediction, and past learning. It prepares behavioural responses before conscious decision. Research on readiness potentials demonstrates that the brain prepares motor responses 300–500 milliseconds before conscious awareness of the decision to act.
The Historical Exclusion
Intelligence was defined as what you can do, not what runs you. Nervous system processes were considered reflexive, not intelligent. We lacked a framework for measuring it. Until we understood the three dimensions — recognition, interpretation, and intentional response — there was no clear way to assess someone’s relationship with their own nervous system.
The Cost of Exclusion
It pathologises normal nervous system responses. Without an intelligence framework, activation gets categorised as disorder rather than information. It limits development frameworks — research on allostatic load demonstrates that the nervous system’s regulatory capacity directly impacts cognitive function, emotional regulation, physical health, and relational behaviour. It leaves people confused about their own behaviour — the missing variable is the nervous system, the layer beneath both knowing and feeling that drives behaviour from below.
The nervous system is not primitive. It is not beneath intelligence. It is the foundation intelligence is built on.
The Case for Inclusion
Including the nervous system in our understanding of intelligence means expanding what counts as "smart." The person who can recognise their own activation in real time and choose a response accordingly is demonstrating a form of intelligence that predicts life outcomes at least as strongly as cognitive IQ. It normalises nervous system education — if nervous system capacity is intelligence, then developing it is education, not therapy. And it completes the picture. Research in interpersonal neurobiology argues that intelligence, fully understood, must include the embodied system that connects brain to world.
What Happens When We Include It
People stop pathologising their reactions and start reading them as information. Self-development gains the missing layer that explains why insight alone does not produce change. Human potential frameworks become complete — including the biological substrate that governs everything built on top of it. Measuring the foundation — giving it a framework, a language, and a quotient — is not adding complexity for its own sake. It is finally including the system we should have been measuring all along.
