There are people who shift your entire state within seconds. Before a full sentence is spoken, before anything has objectively happened, your nervous system has already reorganized itself around their presence.
Maybe your shoulders tense. Maybe you become overly accommodating. Maybe you feel small, or combative, or like a different version of yourself entirely. You might not even like who you become around them — but you cannot seem to stop it from happening.
This is not about that person being bad. This is about pattern recognition operating at a speed that bypasses choice.
Neuroception and Relational Templates
Stephen Porges coined the term "neuroception" to describe your nervous system's capacity to detect safety and danger in other people without conscious evaluation (Porges, 2004). This process runs continuously, reading:
- Vocal prosody (the melody, rhythm, and tone of someone's voice) - Facial micro-expressions - Body posture and proximity - Eye contact patterns - The quality of their nervous system state (regulated or dysregulated)
All of this happens in milliseconds. Your system is not evaluating this person intellectually. It is matching their presentation against a library of relational templates — patterns learned from every significant relationship you have ever had.
When a match is found, your nervous system shifts into the state that corresponds to that template. This is why certain people make you feel like a child. They are not making you feel anything — they are triggering a relational template from childhood, and your nervous system responds as if it were then, with that person, in that dynamic.
The Template System
Louis Cozolino's research on the social brain describes how early attachment relationships create neural templates that function as predictions about how all subsequent relationships will operate (Cozolino, 2014). These templates encode:
- What to expect from people who occupy certain roles - What is required of you to maintain connection - What behaviors precede disconnection, punishment, or abandonment - What emotional states are welcome and which ones need to be hidden
When you encounter someone whose presentation matches a stored template — even in one or two features — your system does not wait to gather more information. It assigns the template and activates the corresponding state. This is why a stranger can feel instantly familiar, or why a new colleague can immediately put you on guard for reasons you cannot articulate.
Why Some Activations Feel Positive
Not all instant activation feels negative. Some people make you feel immediately safe, open, or energized. This is the same mechanism operating in the direction of safety — your nervous system detecting familiar cues that once corresponded to connection, acceptance, or regulation.
However, it is worth noting that instant positive activation is not always reliable either. Because the system is matching templates, not evaluating the present person, someone can feel immediately safe simply because they resemble a familiar dynamic — even if that dynamic was ultimately harmful. The charm of someone who resembles a charismatic but unreliable caregiver can feel exactly like safety to a nervous system that learned to associate excitement with love.
What the Activation Is Actually Telling You
When someone activates you instantly, the activation is not about them. It is about you — specifically, about what your nervous system has stored from past relational experience.
Allan Schore's research on right-brain-to-right-brain communication describes how relational patterns are encoded in the right hemisphere — the brain region most involved in implicit emotional processing and nonverbal communication (Schore, 2003). These encodings are pre-verbal and pre-rational. They do not explain themselves. They simply activate.
What the activation tells you:
- Something about this person's presentation matches a stored relational pattern - Your nervous system has already assigned a template and is responding accordingly - The response you are having right now was learned in a different relationship, at a different time - The intensity of the response often correlates with the intensity of the original experience that created the template
The Interrupt & Identify Practice with People
This is perhaps the most challenging application of Nervous System Intelligence: recognizing that your response to a person may be about a template rather than about them. This does not mean your response is wrong — sometimes the template is accurate and the person genuinely is unsafe. But it does mean that your response deserves investigation rather than automatic obedience.
The practice of Interrupt & Identify in relational activation looks like:
"I notice I just shifted. My body changed. What does this person remind my nervous system of?"
"Is my response to this person proportional to what is actually happening right now?"
"Am I responding to them, or to who they remind me of?"
Research by Marvin Zuckerman on sensation and affect demonstrates that individuals differ dramatically in how they process interpersonal stimuli, and that much of this variation can be traced to early relational learning rather than current social reality (Zuckerman, 2005).
The Person You Become Around Them
Perhaps the most important thing to notice is not what you feel around certain people but who you become. Do you become smaller? More performative? More defensive? More accommodating than you intend? Do you lose access to your own preferences, opinions, or needs?
When a relational template activates, it does not just produce a feeling — it produces a self. The version of you that the original relationship required. And that version will continue to emerge in every relationship that matches the template until you bring conscious awareness to the pattern.
You are not at the mercy of this process forever. But you have to see it first. And seeing it requires the willingness to ask: "Who am I becoming in this person's presence, and is that who I choose to be?"
