Every automatic response you have — the ones that frustrate you, confuse you, or seem to operate against your conscious intentions — has a logic. Not a logic you chose, not one you would design today, but a logic that made perfect sense in the environment where it was created.
This is perhaps the most compassionate understanding Nervous System Intelligence can offer: you are not irrational. Your nervous system is not broken. Every response it produces follows an internal logic that was developed under specific conditions for specific purposes.
The Internal Logic of Protection
To understand the logic of an automatic response, you must think like a nervous system — a system whose primary directive is survival, whose decision-making is based on past experience, and whose timeline for response is measured in milliseconds rather than minutes.
From this perspective, an automatic response is always an answer to a question the nervous system was asking:
- "What is the fastest way to reduce threat?" - "What behavior maintains connection with the people I depend on?" - "What state minimizes the chance of harm?" - "What do I need to do to make this situation survivable?"
Antonio Damasio's somatic marker hypothesis demonstrates that the body generates rapid evaluations of situations based on past outcomes — and that these evaluations function as decision-making shortcuts that bypass slower rational processing (Damasio, 1994). Your automatic responses are not failures of logic. They are the product of a different kind of logic — one that prioritizes speed and survival over accuracy and nuance.
Reading the Logic Backward
You can understand the logic of any automatic response by reading backward from the behavior to the problem it was solving:
If the response is withdrawal → the logic was: "Proximity to others during emotional intensity has historically led to harm. Distance is safety."
If the response is people-pleasing → the logic was: "The people I depend on provide safety only when they are satisfied. My needs must be subordinated to theirs to maintain connection."
If the response is perfectionism → the logic was: "Criticism or failure has historically led to punishment or abandonment. Being beyond reproach is the only safe position."
If the response is anger → the logic was: "Vulnerability has historically been exploited. Displaying strength prevents others from recognizing my vulnerability."
If the response is dissociation → the logic was: "This experience exceeds my capacity to process. Leaving my body is the only escape available."
Each of these logics made sense in specific historical conditions. Not in all conditions — in specific ones. The problem is not the logic. The problem is that the nervous system applies the logic universally rather than contextually.
Why the Logic Persists
Once established, the internal logic of a response becomes self-reinforcing through a phenomenon cognitive scientists call confirmation bias at the neural level. Stephen Porges's research describes how the nervous system's neuroceptive system — which evaluates safety and threat below conscious awareness — processes new experiences through the lens of existing templates (Porges, 2011).
This means that once your nervous system has established the logic "withdrawal equals safety," it will:
- Selectively attend to evidence that confirms this logic - Interpret ambiguous situations as confirmation - Discount experiences that contradict the logic - Filter perception so that the world appears to validate the response
This is not stubbornness. This is the nervous system doing what all prediction systems do: maintaining consistency in its model of the world. Changing the logic requires not just one contradicting experience but enough contradicting experiences to override the accumulated evidence the system has gathered in support of its current operating assumptions.
The Compassionate Turn
Understanding the logic of your automatic responses invites a fundamentally different relationship with them. Instead of "Why do I keep doing this?" the question becomes: "What problem was this solving? What conditions made this the most logical response available?"
Pat Ogden's sensorimotor approach to psychotherapy emphasizes that working with automatic responses requires first recognizing their intelligence — the way they represent the best solution the nervous system could find given the constraints it was operating under (Ogden et al., 2006). When you understand the logic, you can appreciate the response even as you work to expand beyond it.
This is not about excusing harmful behavior toward others. It is about understanding the internal machinery that produces your responses so that you can work with your nervous system rather than against it.
When the Logic No Longer Fits
The Interrupt & Identify practice in relation to automatic logic involves a specific moment of discernment:
"I see the logic of this response. I understand what it was built for. And I can also see that this moment is not the moment it was designed for."
This is not a rejection of the response. It is an expansion — making room for the possibility that the current situation might be different from the historical one, and that a different response might be possible without catastrophe.
Lisa Feldman Barrett's research on prediction error in the brain suggests that when your nervous system receives evidence that contradicts its predictions — when the response fires and the predicted threat does not materialize — it generates a prediction error that, over time, updates the system's model (Barrett, 2017). Each time you allow yourself to respond differently and discover that you are safe, the old logic weakens slightly. Not disappears — weakens. And weakening is the beginning of flexibility.
The Logic Was Never the Problem
The logic behind your automatic responses was never flawed. It was contextually accurate — accurate for the specific environment in which it was developed. What happened was that the context changed and the logic did not update. You are not living in the same conditions anymore, but your nervous system is still applying the same solutions.
Understanding this is the foundation of genuine self-compassion. Not "I should be better" but "I make sense." And from that understanding, change becomes possible — not as correction of a flaw, but as expansion of a system that was always doing its best with the information available.
