There is something remarkable that happens when you name what you are experiencing. Not analyze it. Not explain it. Not judge it. Simply name it.
"I am activated right now." "This is anxiety." "I notice anger." "My nervous system just shifted into protection."
These simple naming statements produce measurable changes in brain activity. They are not just descriptions — they are interventions. The act of naming an internal state begins to change the state itself.
The Neuroscience of Naming
Matthew Lieberman's groundbreaking research at UCLA demonstrated that the simple act of putting feelings into words — which he calls "affect labeling" — produces a significant reduction in amygdala activation (Lieberman et al., 2007). When participants in his studies named the emotions they saw in photographs or experienced internally, functional MRI scans showed decreased activity in the brain's emotional reactivity center and increased activity in the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex — a region associated with processing and regulating emotional experience.
This is not a subtle effect. The reduction in amygdala activity during affect labeling was comparable to the effects of deliberate emotional regulation strategies that require significantly more cognitive effort. In other words, simply naming what you feel works as well as actively trying to control what you feel — with far less effort.
The mechanism appears to involve a bridging function: when you name an experience, you engage the prefrontal cortex in a way that creates a pathway between the experiencing brain (limbic system) and the observing brain (cortex). This bridge does not eliminate the experience — it allows it to be held differently.
Why Naming Works Differently Than Analyzing
There is an important distinction between naming and analyzing. Analyzing says "Why am I feeling this? What does this mean? What caused this?" It generates further cognitive activity — which can actually increase rumination and maintain activation.
Naming says "This is happening" — full stop. No why. No meaning. No story.
Research by Jared Torre and Matthew Lieberman specifically demonstrated that the beneficial effects of labeling occur with simple, descriptive labels ("I feel angry") and are actually diminished when the labeling becomes elaborative ("I feel angry because they always dismiss me and it reminds me of my father") (Torre & Lieberman, 2018). More words do not produce more benefit. Precision and simplicity do.
This finding aligns with Norman Farb's research showing that a direct, present-moment mode of processing (noticing what is) engages different neural networks than an elaborative, self-referential mode (constructing a narrative about what is) (Farb et al., 2007). Naming accesses the first mode. Analyzing activates the second.
What to Name
The practice of naming in NSIQ involves labeling at multiple levels:
Naming the state: "I am activated." "I am in fight mode." "My system is shutting down." "I am dysregulated right now."
Naming the sensation: "There is tightness in my chest." "My breathing has shallowed." "I feel heat in my face." "My stomach is clenched."
Naming the impulse: "I want to leave." "I want to fight back." "I want to become invisible." "I want to fix this immediately."
Naming the pattern: "This is the one where I go quiet." "This is my people-pleasing response." "I recognize this withdrawal."
Each level of naming produces the bridging effect — engaging the prefrontal cortex, reducing the intensity of limbic activation, and creating the small space of awareness that allows for choice.
The Power of Simple Language
The most effective naming uses simple, direct language. Complex vocabulary or clinical terminology can create distance from the experience rather than bridge to it.
"I feel scared" is more powerful than "I am experiencing an anxiety response." "This hurts" is more powerful than "I notice an activation consistent with emotional pain." "I'm overwhelmed" is more powerful than "My window of tolerance has been exceeded."
Dan Siegel's phrase "name it to tame it" captures this principle simply — and research supports that the simpler and more direct the naming, the more effective the regulatory effect (Siegel, 2012).
When Naming Feels Impossible
There are moments when naming is not available — when activation is so intense that language itself becomes inaccessible. This is not failure. It is information about the depth of activation.
When words are not available, even the most basic naming still helps: "Something is happening." "This is big." "I don't have words for this yet."
Stephen Porges's research indicates that when the nervous system moves into dorsal vagal shutdown, access to language (a function of the social engagement system) is physiologically reduced (Porges, 2011). If you cannot name what is happening, your system may be communicating that you have moved beyond the threshold where social engagement functions are online. That awareness — even without specific labels — is itself a form of naming.
Naming as Practice
The power of naming develops with practice. Initially, you might only be able to name experiences retroactively — "Earlier, I was activated." Over time, the naming moves closer to real time — "I am activated right now." Eventually, naming can occur at the earliest edge of a shift — "Something just changed. Let me name it."
This progression is not about speed for its own sake. It is about developing the neural habit of engaging the prefrontal cortex alongside emotional experience rather than being submerged in experience without observation. Each moment of naming trains the connection between feeling and awareness — building the architecture of Nervous System Intelligence one simple statement at a time.
