Why Two People Can Experience the Same Event Completely Differently

You are sitting in a meeting. Your manager says, "I would like to talk to you after this." Five people hear the same sentence. One feels curious. One feels nothing. One feels a wave of dread so intense their hearing dims for the next ten minutes.

Same words. Same room. Same tone. Completely different experiences. This is not because some people are "more sensitive" or "overreact." It is because the same event enters five different nervous systems — each running different predictions based on different histories — and produces five different realities.

The Nervous System Does Not Receive Events. It Constructs Them.

Research in predictive processing demonstrates that the brain does not passively receive information from the environment and then respond to it. The brain generates predictions about what is likely to happen next — and what reaches conscious experience is the gap between prediction and reality.

This means: two people sitting in the same room, hearing the same words, are not having the same experience. Their brains are running different predictions based on entirely different learning histories. What "I would like to talk to you after this" means is not contained in the words. It is contained in what each nervous system predicts those words will lead to.

For the person whose history includes "private conversations with authority equals praise or connection," the prediction is benign. The nervous system does not activate. Curiosity is the output. For the person whose history includes "private conversations with authority equals criticism, punishment, or abandonment," the prediction is threat. The nervous system activates immediately — before conscious processing has even begun. Dread is the output. Not a choice. Not an overreaction. A prediction based on data.

The Same Event Activates Different Histories

The constructed emotion framework proposes that emotions are not universal reactions triggered by events but constructions the brain builds using three inputs: prior experience, current context, and bodily state. When an event occurs, your nervous system asks: "What has happened before when this pattern appeared?" The answer — drawn from years of stored experience — determines what emotion gets constructed, what body state gets produced, and what behaviour gets prepared.

This means the event itself is almost irrelevant to explaining the reaction. What matters is the history the event activates. Two people can be in the same car accident and have completely different experiences — not because the accident was different, but because their nervous systems have different histories with loss of control, physical danger, and helplessness.

Research on trauma processing demonstrates that the nervous system stores experience not as narrative memory but as bodily prediction — what van der Kolk describes as the body keeping the score. The body remembers at a speed and depth that conscious narrative cannot access. When a current event matches a stored pattern, the nervous system responds to the pattern, not to the present.

Why This Matters for Understanding Yourself and Others

For understanding yourself: when you have a reaction that seems "disproportionate" to the situation, it is not disproportionate to the prediction your nervous system is running. The intensity of your response is data — it tells you how strongly your system is predicting something based on your history. The response makes perfect sense. It just makes sense in a different timeline than the present one.

For understanding others: when someone reacts to something in a way that seems inexplicable to you — when your partner is devastated by something you find trivial, or your colleague is threatened by something you find neutral — their nervous system is running a different prediction from a different history. Their reality in that moment is genuinely different from yours. Not wrong. Different.

The NSIQ Connection

This is precisely where NSIQ becomes relevant. NSIQ measures your ability to recognise that your experience is constructed, not objective — that what you feel in response to an event is your nervous system’s prediction, not the event’s inherent meaning. To interpret which history your nervous system is accessing: "this reaction connects to a specific pattern, not to this present situation as it actually is." And to respond intentionally rather than automatically executing the behaviour your nervous system prepared based on its prediction.

Research on cognitive reappraisal demonstrates that changing the interpretation of an event changes the emotional and physiological response to it — but only when the person has access to the original interpretation and understands its source. Without that understanding, reappraisal is guesswork.

The Relief of Understanding

If the experience is constructed, it can be reconstructed — not through denial, but through understanding the construction process and participating in it consciously.

When you understand that your experience is constructed — that two people can genuinely experience the same event differently without either being wrong — several things happen. Self-blame decreases. Your reactions are not evidence of brokenness. They are evidence of a nervous system that learned something in a different time. Compassion for others increases. Their reactions are not overreactions from your frame. They are accurate reactions from theirs. And change becomes possible. That is what NSIQ development offers: not a different reality, but a conscious relationship with the one your nervous system constructs.
