You may have divided the world into people who can regulate their emotions and people who cannot. People who stay calm under pressure and people who fall apart. People who have it together and people who are too reactive, too sensitive, too much.
This division is based on a fundamental misunderstanding. Regulation is not a character trait. It is a skill — one that some people were taught early and others were not, one that develops through specific relational and environmental conditions, and one that can be built at any point in life regardless of where you are starting.
Why Some People Appear More Regulated
The people who appear naturally regulated were not born that way. They were co-regulated. Research on attachment and emotional development demonstrates that the capacity for self-regulation develops through the repeated experience of being regulated by another person — typically a primary caregiver in early life (Schore, 2001).
When a caregiver consistently responds to a child's distress with attuned, calming presence, the child's nervous system learns the pathway from activation to settlement. Through thousands of repetitions, this pathway becomes internalized — what was once provided by another becomes a capacity within the self.
When this co-regulation was inconsistent, absent, or itself dysregulated — when the caregiver could not provide consistent, attuned settling — the child's nervous system did not have the opportunity to learn that pathway. The neural connections between activation and regulation were not strengthened through repetition. This is not a personality deficit. It is a developmental gap — a skill that was not taught because the environment could not teach it.
The Neuroscience of Regulation as Skill
Richard Davidson's research program at the University of Wisconsin has demonstrated conclusively that emotional regulation capacity is modifiable through practice — that the neural circuits involved in regulation (particularly prefrontal-amygdala connectivity) respond to training the way a muscle responds to exercise (Davidson & Begley, 2012).
Specifically, Davidson's research shows:
- Prefrontal cortex thickness increases with regulation practice - Amygdala reactivity decreases with consistent training - The speed of recovery from emotional activation improves measurably - These changes are detectable within weeks of consistent practice
These findings mean regulation is not a fixed quantity determined by early experience. Early experience determines your starting point — but it does not determine your ceiling. The neural plasticity that would have allowed regulation to develop in childhood is still present in adulthood. What is needed is the same thing that was needed then: repeated experience of settling after activation.
What Regulation Actually Means
Regulation does not mean: - Never feeling activated - Appearing calm at all times - Controlling your emotions - Not having strong reactions - Being emotionally neutral
Regulation means: - The ability to experience activation without losing access to choice - The capacity to return to baseline after being activated - The flexibility to modulate the intensity of a response to match the situation - The ability to stay present with difficult experiences without being overwhelmed or shutting down
Daniel Siegel describes regulation as the capacity to remain within your "window of tolerance" — the zone where you can experience the full range of emotion while maintaining access to executive function (Siegel, 2012). A well-regulated person is not someone who never leaves this window. They are someone who can return to it — and who has a wider window than they used to.
Building the Skill
Because regulation is a skill, it can be developed through specific practices:
Body-based regulation: Learning to use breath, movement, touch, and sensory grounding to shift your autonomic state. Research by Bessel van der Kolk demonstrates that body-based interventions are often more effective than cognitive approaches for building regulation capacity because they work directly with the autonomic nervous system rather than trying to override it from above (van der Kolk, 2014).
Co-regulation: Spending time in the presence of regulated others. The nervous system continues to learn from relational experience throughout life. Being with someone who is regulated provides your nervous system with a template it can reference and gradually internalize.
Titrated exposure: Deliberately experiencing small amounts of activation in safe contexts and practicing settling. Each experience of "I was activated and I came back to baseline" strengthens the neural pathway of regulation.
Recognition without action: Practicing noticing activation without immediately acting on it or suppressing it. The simple act of witnessing yourself in an activated state, without the state overwhelming you, builds the regulatory architecture.
The Timeline of Skill-Building
Because regulation is a skill with a developmental history, building it takes time. If you are starting from a place of significant dysregulation, the path forward is gradual — each small improvement building on the last.
The key insight is that you do not need to go from where you are to perfect regulation. You need to go from where you are to slightly better. And then from slightly better to slightly better again. Each increment builds capacity that makes the next increment possible.
This is not a quick fix. But it is a genuine path. And it is available to everyone, regardless of starting point — because the brain retains its capacity for plastic change across the entire lifespan.
