Your mind generates thoughts constantly — stories, interpretations, predictions, evaluations. Your nervous system generates signals constantly — physical sensations, autonomic shifts, impulses, body-level information. They are not the same thing. But they feel the same from inside.
Learning to distinguish between a thought and a signal is one of the most important skills in Nervous System Intelligence because it determines the quality of your self-reading. If you mistake a thought for a signal, you will respond to a narrative rather than to reality. If you mistake a signal for a thought, you will try to think your way through something that requires body-level attention.
What Thoughts Do
Thoughts are cognitive productions — language-based narratives generated by the cortex, particularly the left hemisphere's "interpreter" function. They explain, predict, evaluate, and judge.
Thoughts say: - "They probably think I'm incompetent" - "This is going to end badly" - "I shouldn't feel this way" - "I'm overreacting" - "They're going to leave"
These are not information from the present moment. They are predictions, interpretations, and evaluations generated by a brain that is doing what brains do: making sense of experience through narrative. Sometimes the narratives are accurate. Often they are projections of past experience onto the present situation.
Michael Gazzaniga's research on the left hemisphere's interpreter function demonstrates that the brain generates explanatory narratives automatically and compulsively — even when those narratives have no relationship to the actual cause of an experience (Gazzaniga, 2000). Your mind tells stories. That is its job. But not all stories are accurate reflections of present reality.
What Signals Do
Signals are body-level communications from your nervous system — physical sensations and autonomic shifts that carry information about your physiological state and your system's assessment of the environment.
Signals feel like: - Tightness in the chest - Heat rising in the face - A dropping sensation in the stomach - Tension in the throat - Heaviness in the limbs - A constriction or expansion in the body - An impulse to move (toward, away, or still)
These are not narratives. They do not come with explanations or predictions. They come as raw sensation — the body's language for communicating its assessment of the current situation.
Antonio Damasio's research distinguishes between the brain's generation of "somatic markers" — body-based signals that provide genuine information about how a situation is being processed — and the cognitive interpretations that are subsequently layered onto those signals (Damasio, 1994). The signal comes first. The thought comes second. And the thought may or may not accurately reflect what the signal was actually communicating.
How They Get Confused
The confusion between thoughts and signals happens because the brain immediately interprets body signals through its existing narrative framework. The sequence is:
1. Body signal arrives (tightness in chest) 2. Brain generates interpretation ("Something is wrong") 3. Brain elaborates interpretation ("They're angry at me") 4. You experience the elaboration as if it were the original signal
By step 4, you are responding to a story rather than to the actual body-level information. The original signal (tightness in chest) might have been communicating any number of things — activation, excitement, anticipation, old material being triggered — but the narrative locked it into one interpretation.
Lisa Feldman Barrett's theory of constructed emotion demonstrates that what we experience as emotions are actually the brain's best guess about what body signals mean in context (Barrett, 2017). The body provides raw data. The mind provides the category and the story. They are co-created, but they can also be disentangled.
How to Distinguish Them
The practice of distinguishing thoughts from signals involves learning to separate the layers:
Layer 1 (Signal): What is my body actually doing? What sensations are present? Where in my body do I notice them? Layer 2 (Thought): What story is my mind telling about these sensations? What interpretation has been applied?
The signal is always physical, always present-tense, and always without narrative. If you can describe it without a story — "There is tightness in my chest" — you are at the signal level. The moment you add explanation — "because they are angry at me" — you have moved to the thought level.
Norman Farb's research demonstrates that people can learn to access a "direct experience" mode of processing internal information — one that registers sensation without automatic interpretation — and that this mode is associated with distinct neural activation in the insula and somatosensory cortex rather than the default mode network (Farb et al., 2007).
Why This Distinction Matters
When you can separate signal from thought, you gain access to clearer information:
- The signal tells you your nervous system state (activated, settled, mobilized, shut down) - The thought tells you what your brain is predicting based on past experience
Sometimes these align — your body signals danger AND the situation is genuinely dangerous. But often they diverge — your body signals danger because of a historical association while the current situation is actually safe. Knowing which layer you are receiving information from helps you respond to what is actually happening rather than to what your brain predicts might be happening.
In Practice
The next time you notice an internal experience that feels urgent, try this separation:
"What is my body doing right now?" (Signal — stay with sensation only) "What is my mind saying about it?" (Thought — notice the narrative separately) "Are these saying the same thing, or different things?"
Sometimes the signal and the thought agree: your body is alerting you to something real that your mind correctly identifies. Respond accordingly.
Sometimes they diverge: your body is activated based on an old association while your mind is generating a narrative that matches past experience rather than present reality. In these moments, you have the opportunity to check: "Is the thought accurate to what is happening now? Or is it an old prediction running on a current signal?"
This discernment — the ability to receive the signal, observe the thought, and evaluate whether they match the present — is a core capacity of Nervous System Intelligence.
