Yes. Unequivocally yes. And if anyone tells you otherwise, they are describing a fantasy, not a human nervous system.
This question comes up because people naturally assume that understanding should prevent reaction. That if you truly get how your nervous system works, it should stop doing the things it has always done. But nervous system intelligence is not an off switch for activation. It is the capacity to be with activation differently.
Why Triggers Do Not Disappear With Awareness
A trigger is your nervous system detecting a pattern match between your current environment and a past experience that required a protective response. This detection happens subcortically, below the level of conscious thought, in approximately 20 milliseconds (LeDoux, 2000). Your awareness, no matter how developed, operates on a slower timescale.
This means that by the time your conscious mind recognizes what is happening, your nervous system has already initiated a response. You feel the surge of cortisol, the tightening in your chest, the impulse to fight, flee, or freeze. High NSIQ does not prevent this initial activation. It changes what happens next.
The Difference High NSIQ Makes
Research on emotional regulation in experienced meditators, people who have spent thousands of hours developing internal awareness, demonstrates that they still show amygdala activation in response to emotional stimuli. The difference is not in the initial response but in the recovery time and the behavioral choices that follow (Lutz et al., 2014).
Someone with high NSIQ gets triggered. Then: - They recognize the trigger faster: "My system just activated." - They identify the pattern sooner: "This is my criticism response." - They create space more quickly: "I notice the urge to defend. I do not have to act on it immediately." - They choose their response more often: "I am going to pause before I speak." - They recover more quickly afterward.
None of these capacities require the absence of triggering. They require the presence of awareness during triggering.
The Myth of Arriving Beyond Triggers
There is a seductive myth in personal development culture that enough work leads to a state beyond reactivity. Research on the human stress response contradicts this completely. The stress response system is a survival mechanism that does not deactivate because you understand it (Sapolsky, 2004). It evolved over millions of years to protect you, and it will continue doing its job regardless of your insight.
What changes with NSIQ development is your relationship to the response, not the response itself. You move from being unconsciously consumed by your reactions to being consciously present with them. This is a fundamentally different experience even though the physiological activation may be identical.
What People With High NSIQ Actually Experience
People with high NSIQ often report that they get triggered just as intensely, but they experience the trigger differently. Rather than being swept into an automatic behavioral chain, they observe the activation with a quality of dual awareness: they are in the experience and simultaneously observing it.
Research on decentering, the ability to observe thoughts and feelings as temporary mental events rather than accurate reflections of reality, demonstrates that this capacity develops with practice and is associated with reduced emotional distress without reduced emotional experience (Bernstein et al., 2015).
In other words, high NSIQ does not make you feel less. It may actually make you feel more, because you are no longer reflexively numbing or avoiding your internal experience. The difference is that feeling more does not automatically become acting out more.
Why This Matters
Understanding that triggering persists regardless of NSIQ level protects you from two harmful conclusions:
First, it prevents you from using continued reactivity as evidence that your work is not effective. If you are waiting to stop getting triggered before you believe you are making progress, you will wait forever. Progress lives in the space between trigger and response, not in the absence of triggers.
Second, it prevents you from pursuing an unreachable standard. The goal of nervous system intelligence is not imperviousness. It is presence. Not the absence of activation, but the ability to be with activation without being controlled by it.
The Real Measure
The real measure of NSIQ is not whether you get triggered. It is what happens in the ten seconds after triggering occurs. Can you notice what just happened? Can you name it? Can you choose what comes next rather than defaulting to autopilot?
Research on the neural basis of self-regulation demonstrates that the pause between impulse and action, even when that pause is measured in seconds, involves measurable prefrontal cortex engagement that strengthens with practice (Berkman et al., 2012). Each time you catch yourself mid-trigger and choose rather than react, you are building the infrastructure for more choice in the future.
You will always get triggered. The question is not how to prevent it. The question is how to meet it. And that question is one your NSIQ can actually answer.
