The Science

Wilson et al. (2014), in a widely-cited Science paper, ran eleven studies in which participants were left alone with their thoughts for 6–15 minutes; many found the experience so unpleasant that they preferred to administer mild electric shocks to themselves rather than sit undisturbed. The authors concluded that undirected mental stillness is genuinely aversive to many people.
