Naming guardedness as neuroception — not as coldness, moral failing, or unwillingness to "give people a chance" — restores agency to the reader and dignity to the signal.

The Science

Porges (2007), in Biological Psychology, described neuroception as the nervous system’s subconscious detection of environmental cues signalling safety, danger, or life threat — a process that operates in real time, does not require awareness, and largely determines which autonomic state a person occupies. Öhman and Mineka (2001), in Psychological Review, provided converging evidence for a "fear module" — a rapid, largely automatic threat-detection system evolved to identify social and environmental danger cues, with priority routing over slower cortical evaluation.

Current Research

Contemporary work is mapping how prior interpersonal trauma calibrates neuroception, and testing interventions that update the calibration without dismissing the underlying signal.

Practical Implications

For anyone: guardedness is data. Sometimes the calibration is accurate; sometimes it is over-tuned from prior experience. Either way, the signal deserves respect — and neither forced trust nor blanket avoidance is the answer.
