The Science

Craig (2002), in a landmark Nature Reviews Neuroscience paper, argued that interoception — the sense of the physiological condition of the body — is a distinct sensory modality routed through the insular cortex, generating an ongoing representation of internal state that informs feeling long before it informs thought. Critchley, Wiens, Rotshtein, Öhman, and Dolan (2004), in Nature Neuroscience, provided the neuroimaging correlate: interoceptive awareness (measured by heartbeat perception accuracy) correlated with grey-matter volume in the right anterior insula, and with the intensity of subjective emotional experience.

Current Research

Contemporary work is refining interoception into multiple dimensions (accuracy, sensibility, awareness) and testing interoceptive training as an intervention for anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.
