The Science

The predictive-processing framework treats trust as a prior about another person’s behavior that updates through experience (King-Casas et al., 2005). Neuroimaging shows that trust involves specific prefrontal and striatal regions consistent with a value-and-prediction system.

Behavioral economics and social neuroscience converge: trust is built by repeated, small, consistent behaviors. It is broken more quickly than it is built.

For repairing broken trust: the operative variable is not the size of the apology but the accumulation of subsequent consistent behavior.
