Modern working life rewards visible speed. It rarely rewards the quiet slowing that changes what a decision even is.

Why This Matters

The person who cannot slow down cannot access the parts of their cognition that make the harder decisions well. Naming the distinction restores access to a set of capacities that speed alone forecloses.

The Science

Dual-process theories of cognition, formalised by Evans (2008) and popularised by Kahneman (2011), distinguish between fast, automatic, associative processing (System 1) and slow, deliberate, effortful processing (System 2). Both are essential; problems arise when a decision that requires deliberation is made instead by pattern-matching under time pressure. Bechara and Damasio (2005) extended the picture in a body-relevant direction: even fast intuitive judgments draw on somatic markers laid down by past experience. For organisations: cultures that reward visible speed without pauses for deliberation systematically produce foreseeable errors.
