Why This Matters

If rituals reliably regulate physiology and cohere groups, then discarding them wholesale removes a functional technology. Understanding them lets us keep the ones that work — or design new ones.

The Science

Hobson, Schroeder, Risen, Xygalatas, and Inzlicht (2018) synthesized the psychological science of ritual into a process-based framework identifying three core functions: emotion regulation, performance goal-state regulation, and social connection. Fischer, Callander, Reddish, and Bulbulia (2013) demonstrated experimentally that rituals involving synchronous body movement elevated prosocial behavior in a public-goods game, while rituals rated as sacred produced the largest contributions of all — pointing to both bodily and meaning-based routes to the same social outcome.

Current Research

Work by Xygalatas and others is documenting the physiological signature of high-intensity rituals — heart-rate synchrony, stress-hormone coordination, and long-lasting affiliation effects.

Practical Implications

For individuals: a small, repeated, meaningful sequence — morning, mealtime, transition — is one of the cheapest regulatory tools available. For organisations: shared rituals are not corporate theater; they are cohesion technology.
