Introduction

Resilience is a word that has been asked to do too much. It is often used to praise people for enduring what should not have to be endured. The underlying science is more useful, and more humane, than that.

Why This Matters

Understanding resilience as processes, not properties — and as built, not born — changes what we invest in for individuals, families, and communities under load.

The Science

Southwick, Bonanno, Masten, Panter-Brick, and Yehuda (2014) reviewed the field across disciplines and concluded that resilience is best understood as a multi-level set of adaptive processes rather than a single trait — shaped by genetic, developmental, cultural, relational, and economic factors, and requiring interventions at multiple levels. Feldman (2020), in her affiliative-neuroscience model of resilience, argued that resilience is fundamentally built through repeated coordinated social experience — the small daily choreography of caregiving, empathy, and synchrony that trains the developing brain.

Current Research

Contemporary work is testing which specific relational and behavioral inputs matter most at which developmental windows, and how adult resilience can still be built through analogous processes.

Practical Implications

For anyone: the accumulation of small, ordinary moments of co-regulation matters more than any single “big” intervention. For institutions: designing for many small good moments is high leverage.

**"Resilience is toughness."** It is not toughness; it is flexibility with support. **"You either have it or you don’t."** Neither. It is built.
