Introduction

One of the least-discussed features of getting well is that it initially feels wrong. The person whose baseline was vigilance experiences peace as absence, not presence — and the absence itself becomes threatening.

Why This Matters

When the person new to peace misreads their own unfamiliarity as a signal that peace is unsafe, they often recreate the conditions of the previous state. Naming the phenomenon prevents the sabotage.

The Science

LeDoux and Pine (2016) laid out a two-system model of fear: implicit threat circuits produce autonomic activation before conscious appraisal, and conscious feelings of anxiety are constructed on top of those signals. For a nervous system trained on chronic threat, the implicit circuits fire without a current threat to explain them — and the conscious mind, needing an explanation, generates one. Bar-Haim and colleagues (2007) meta-analysed the attentional-bias literature and found that anxious individuals systematically detect threat cues faster than non-anxious individuals. When threat is absent, the detection system does not shut off — it searches. That searching *is* what quiet feels like from the inside.

Interventions that explicitly name this phenomenon — particularly in trauma-informed treatment — reduce dropout. The person prepared for the unfamiliarity of safety is far more likely to stay long enough for the priors to update.
