Introduction

The nervous system evolved in forests, grasslands, and coastlines. It did not evolve in traffic. When we return, however briefly, some very old machinery seems to notice.

Reframing nature as a regulatory tool — rather than a decorative preference — changes clinical prescription, urban planning, and personal routine.

The Science

Bratman and colleagues (2015) randomised participants to a 90-minute walk in either a natural or an urban setting and found that the nature walk produced measurable reductions in rumination and in activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex — a region implicated in self-referential negative thought. Park and colleagues (2010), studying the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku across 24 forests, documented lower cortisol, lower pulse rate, lower blood pressure, and a shift from sympathetic toward parasympathetic dominance in forest settings compared with matched city settings.

Current Research

Contemporary work extends the same finding to blue spaces (water), urban parks, and even indoor plants, and is beginning to map dose-response relationships.

Practical Implications

For clinicians: nature prescriptions can be part of a real treatment plan. For individuals: even brief, regular contact with green or blue space measurably shifts autonomic tone.
