Adult Plasticity
Bounded, effortful, and real.
The adult brain is neither the endlessly malleable canvas of self-help nor the frozen circuit of mid-century neurology. It is a bounded plastic system: capable of significant, life-altering change in some dimensions, resistant to change in others, and sensitive to conditions in all of them.

What adults readily change
Adults form new synaptic connections continuously in response to focused practice, novel experience, and repeated exposure. Skills, associations, autonomic responses, and habits are all within reach.28,30
Adult neurogenesis is more limited but does occur in specific regions such as the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus — supporting learning, memory, and emotional flexibility.32

What remains structurally constrained
Some aspects of the brain are genuinely less plastic in adulthood: certain critical-period developmental windows do close, some large-scale reorganisations are unavailable outside childhood, and severe damage may leave certain functions permanently altered.32
The honest reading: much is available, some is not, and confusion between the two is the source of most disappointment.30

The NSI reading
For the reader interested in changing their own nervous system, the message is neither "everything is possible" nor "you are stuck". It is: the change you want is likely available, on a longer timescale than marketing suggests, in conditions the marketing does not describe.
