The Space Between Reaction and Regulation

Sleep Debt and Navigation Capacity
Sleep debt is not metaphor. It accumulates measurably — in reaction time, emotional reactivity, HRV, and cognitive precision — and it is repaid slowly.
What Actually Accumulates
Chronically short-sleeping adults show sustained elevations in inflammatory markers, cortisol, and sympathetic tone. Reaction time slows. Attention narrows. Emotional reactivity climbs. HRV drops. Every one of these is a Navigation Capacity metric moving in the wrong direction — not from a failure of practice, but from a system that has been running under-resourced.
Why One Good Night Does Not Fix It
Sleep debt does not clear on a single night of recovery. The system needs multiple consecutive nights of sufficient sleep to return to baseline, and the older the debt, the longer the repayment. This is why weekend sleep-in patterns produce partial relief without full restoration.
The Frame To Hold
Reduced Navigation Capacity is not always a Framework issue or a discipline issue. Sometimes it is simply an under-slept nervous system doing its honest best inside real biological constraints. The most compassionate first move, before any deeper interior work, is often to sleep. Consistently. For a few weeks. Then reassess.
“Before deeper interior work, sleep. Everything else lands more accurately on a rested system.”
