The Science of Becoming More Adaptable
Adaptability is not a personality trait. It is a set of nervous-system properties that respond to training. The evidence for this is now hard to ignore.
What Adaptability Actually Requires
Autonomic flexibility (the ability to shift between sympathetic and parasympathetic states quickly). Interoceptive accuracy (the ability to read the signal). Prediction-error tolerance (the ability to update the internal model when reality diverges). Recovery speed (the ability to return to baseline). All four are trainable.
What Trains Them
Sustained aerobic conditioning trains autonomic flexibility. Interoceptive attention practice — including within movement — trains signal-reading. Deliberate practice under load trains prediction-error tolerance. Adequate sleep and recovery train recovery speed. Nothing in this list is exotic.
The Frame
Adaptability is not who you are. It is what you have practiced. Which means the person who fears they are “not the adaptable type” is describing a Framework, not a fixed trait. The science says the Framework can move.
“Adaptability is not a personality. It is a set of trainable nervous-system properties.”
