Inflammation as a Navigation‑Capacity Cost

Low-grade chronic inflammation is one of the most consequential and least visible Navigation Capacity costs. The nervous system does not do its best work inside an inflamed body.

What Chronic Inflammation Actually Is

Inflammation is a normal, useful response to injury or infection when it is acute and resolves. When it becomes chronic and low-grade — from poor diet, poor sleep, sustained stress, sedentary living, or environmental exposures — the immune messengers involved reach the brain and shift how it functions. Mood dampens. Motivation softens. Attention narrows.

Why This Is Not Fringe

The link between inflammation and depression is one of the most robust findings of the last twenty years of neuroscience. It does not mean depression is only inflammation. It does mean that a chronically inflamed nervous system is being asked to do skilled interior work with sand in the gears.

What Actually Lowers It

The reliable levers are the ordinary ones: adequate sleep, regular movement, more plants and fiber, more omega-3s, less ultra-processed food, less chronic alcohol, and reasonable stress management. None of them is a single dramatic move. All of them, held together for eight to twelve weeks, reliably reduce inflammatory markers and, downstream, restore a measure of Navigation Capacity.
