Breath Holds and CO₂ Tolerance
Deliberate breath holds train CO₂ tolerance — the nervous system’s ability to sit with the sensation of “air hunger” without panicking. This has direct implications for how it handles other kinds of discomfort.
What CO₂ Tolerance Is
Air hunger is triggered by rising CO₂, not falling O₂. A nervous system with poor CO₂ tolerance panics at very mild CO₂ elevations, driving anxious breath patterns. A well-trained nervous system tolerates higher CO₂ calmly, which improves oxygen delivery and reduces reactivity.
What This Transfers To
The composure trained under mild breath-hold discomfort tends to transfer to other discomforts — emotional, situational, interpersonal. The system practices sitting inside sensation without escalating. That is Navigation Capacity practice in unusually pure form.
The Practice
After a normal exhale, hold the breath and count how many seconds pass before the urge to inhale becomes strong. This is your CO₂ tolerance score. Practise gently — not to failure. Retest weekly. Do not attempt in water. Do not attempt with a heart or lung condition without medical guidance.
