The NSI Lexicon

The canonical vocabulary of Nervous System Intelligence. Every term in one place, defined in plain language, so nothing important lands unnamed.

These are the words the body has been using all along. You are welcome to borrow them.

A

5 terms
  • Activation

The nervous system rising to meet a challenge — not always a bad thing.

  • Allostasis

How the body maintains stability through change, rather than by holding still.

  • Amygdala

The brain’s alarm system — the first flag on a threat, real or imagined.

  • Attachment

The nervous-system pattern of who we turn to when we cannot regulate alone.

  • Autonomic Nervous System

The part of you that keeps you alive without asking.

    See: The autonomic nervous system

B

2 terms
  • Baseline

The nervous-system state a person tends to return to when nothing is pressing.

  • Bottom-up

Change that begins in the body and reaches the mind — not the other way around.

C

2 terms
  • Coherence

The felt sense when heart, breath, and thought move at the same tempo.

  • Coregulation

Being calmed by another calm nervous system.

    See: Emotional co-regulation

D

3 terms
  • Dissociation

A protective distance the nervous system creates when overwhelmed.

  • Dorsal Vagal

The oldest branch of the vagus — the freeze / shut-down response.

  • Downregulation

Bringing an activated system back to a steadier state.

F

2 terms
  • Fight or Flight

The classical activation response — mobilise, escape, protect.

  • Freeze

Not the absence of movement but the presence of a specific protection.

G

1 term
  • Glimmer

A micro-cue of safety — the opposite of a trigger.

H

2 terms
  • Hyperarousal

The nervous system stuck in the accelerator — alert, restless, hard to sleep.

  • Hypoarousal

The nervous system stuck in the brake — numb, foggy, disconnected.

I

1 term
  • Interoception

The sense of what is happening inside your body — hunger, tension, breath, heart.

N

4 terms
  • Neuroception

The nervous system’s under-the-radar reading of threat or safety, before thought.

  • Neuroplasticity

The nervous system’s ability to rewire itself through repetition and safety.

See: How the nervous system learns

  • NIRVA Method

A five-step practice for intentionally responding to nervous-system patterns: Notice → Interrupt & Identify → Regulate → Validate → Align.

    See: The NIRVA Method

  • NSI

Nervous System Intelligence — the emerging discipline that names what the body already knows.

See: What is Nervous System Intelligence?

P

3 terms
  • Parasympathetic

The brake pedal of the nervous system — rest, digest, restore.

    See: The parasympathetic nervous system

  • Pattern

A nervous-system loop rehearsed enough times to become a reflex.

    See: How patterns form

  • Polyvagal Theory

An influential, still-debated model of how the vagus nerve shapes safety, connection, and defense.

R

3 terms
  • Reconsolidation

The window in which a re-visited memory becomes editable.

    See: Memory reconsolidation

  • Regulation

The skill of guiding the nervous system back toward a workable state — not calm on demand.

See: What is nervous system regulation?

  • Rupture & Repair

The relational rhythm through which safety is rebuilt after conflict.

S

4 terms
  • Safety

The felt sense of being met, held, and not-in-danger — the precondition for change.

  • Somatic

Pertaining to the body — the felt, moved, embodied dimension of experience.

  • Stress

The nervous system rising to meet what it perceives as demand.

    See: What is stress?

  • Sympathetic

The accelerator branch of the autonomic system — energy, alertness, movement.

    See: The sympathetic nervous system

T

3 terms
  • Titration

Approaching a difficult feeling in small, tolerable doses instead of all at once.

  • Top-down

Change that begins in the mind — language, meaning, story — and reaches the body.

  • Trigger

A cue that reopens an old nervous-system pattern before thought can intervene.

V

2 terms
  • Vagus Nerve

The longest cranial nerve — the highway between brain, heart, and gut.

  • Ventral Vagal

The newest branch of the vagus — the social-engagement / safety state.

W

1 term
  • Window of Tolerance

The range of arousal in which a nervous system can still learn, feel, and choose.
