Your brain accounts for approximately 2% of your body weight but consumes roughly 20% of your metabolic energy at rest. When the amygdala and associated threat-detection circuits remain continuously activated, that percentage increases. Neuroimaging studies show that sustained amygdala activation correlates with increased cerebral blood flow to threat-processing regions and decreased availability to prefrontal cortex functions like planning, decision-making, and emotional regulation(Rauch et al. 2000). The brain is not creating energy from nothing. It is redirecting resources.
This means that every moment you spend scanning your environment for threat, your body is burning glucose at an elevated rate, maintaining elevated cortisol and norepinephrine, keeping muscle tension at a readiness baseline, processing sensory information at amplified resolution, and running predictive models about what could happen next. None of this shows up on a to-do list. None of it produces a deliverable. All of it costs energy as real as running or lifting.

Your nervous system learned that scanning was survival. It learned that the moment you stopped paying attention was the moment something went wrong. That learning was accurate at the time. Your body kept you alive, or kept you from being harmed further, by never looking away. The exhaustion you feel now is not a sign that something is wrong with you. The exhaustion of always watching is real. It has a biological basis, a metabolic cost, and a neurological mechanism. It is not in your head, or rather, it is in your head in the most literal, physiological sense possible. You did not choose this state. Your nervous system chose it for you, in a time when it was the best available option. Honouring that choice, and the cost it carries, is the beginning of something different. Not forcing relaxation. Not demanding that your body stop doing what kept it safe. But acknowledging, finally, what this vigilance has cost you, and allowing that acknowledgement to mean something.
