Emotions are made, not received.

For over a century, psychology described emotions as pre-packaged responses — fear, anger, joy — triggered by matching stimuli. Contemporary affective science has revised that account. Lisa Feldman Barrett and colleagues have shown that emotions are constructed by the brain in the moment, using interoceptive signals, learned concepts, and situational cues. Understanding this reframes what it means to work with feeling.

The theory of constructed emotion

The brain does not "detect" emotion in the way a thermometer detects temperature. It constructs an emotional interpretation from three ingredients: the current interoceptive state of the body, the situational context, and the concepts the person has for categorising internal experience.3,51,89

This is why the same physiological state — a racing heart, a tight chest — can register as anxiety, excitement, romantic love, or fear, depending on context and prior learning.89

Interoception is the raw material

The body’s internal signals — heart rate, respiratory pattern, gut tone, temperature — are the substrate. Language and concept are what turn that substrate into a named emotion.10,12,5

Why the classical view still feels right

The classical view — that emotions are innate reactions — persists because emotional experience feels automatic and universal. The constructionist account does not deny the universality of interoceptive arousal; it clarifies that the labeling and shape of the emotion is where culture, learning, and language enter.51

The NSI reading

If emotions are constructed, then working with them is not primarily about suppressing or expressing them. It is about tending the interoceptive body from which they are built, and expanding the concepts through which they are interpreted.
